We owe this style of sleeves to Lord Raglan, or FitzRoy James Henry Somerset. It is said that, having lost an arm during the Battle of Waterloo, he invented a sleeve system that made it easier for him to put on his clothes. These sleeves are actually one single piece of material that goes up to the neck, creating a diagonal seam between the armpit and the collarbone. This armhole, beyond the practical aspect, gives a particular aesthetic to the garment.
