The “Chandail”

The term “chandail” was coined in the 19th century. Back then, the vegetable mongers of the Halles de Paris market stalls travelled from Brittany to sell their garlic cloves (ail in French) in the winter, wearing thick jumpers knitted by their wives. They were thus nicknamed the “chandails”. The term was later used to describe thick, wool jumpers and knits.

The moss stitch

The moss stitch is recognisable thanks to its amusing embossed feel made of little balls, obtained by alternatively knitting right and left stitches on the same ground thread, then by inverting the stitches on the next thread. It’s a reversible knitting stitch which is very long-lasting.
