C’est sous le soleil de Biarritz que Simon nous a donné rendez-vous. Entre son travail de réalisation et d’illustration, c’est un artiste touche-à-tout. Son style est épuré, un chouilla provocateur, un brin coquin. Il crée des personnages affranchis à palette de couleurs caractéristiques.
Hello Simon, explique nous ton parcours. Comment t’es-tu pris d’amour pour l’illustration?

Bonjour, j’ai fait des études dans le cinéma d’animation, c’est ce qui m’a fait toucher un peu à tout d’un point de vue dessin. J’ai beaucoup travaillé dans divers studios d’animation. J’ai commencé par faire beaucoup de 3D, puis ensuite beaucoup d’illustrations pour de la pré-production. C’est à ce moment que j’ai commencé à faire des illustrations plus personnelles.
Avant de poser tes valises à Biarritz, tu as quitté notre chère vieille France pour t’exiler à Londres, pourquoi cette ville ?

C’est un Studio Londonien, Nexus Productions, qui m’a recruté en tant que freelance juste après mes études pour venir faire de la 3D pour eux. J’avais 23 ans, je sortais de l’école, je ne parlais pas vraiment anglais donc je me suis dit que ce serait une bonne idée.
J’y suis resté 10 ans et donc Londres a eu une grosse influence sur moi.
Tes illustrations sont très narratives, tu n’as jamais pensé à te lancer dans la réalisation d’une BD ?

Oui, j’aimerais bientôt développer des projets plus longs, mais mon emploi du temps s’est trop compressé ces deux dernières années. J'essaye de me libérer du temps pour moi cette année, surtout pour ne rien faire aussi.
J’aime glander seul, c’est souvent le meilleur moment pour trouver des idées.
Tu as également créé de nombreuses illustrations animées. Un dessin animé en préparation ?

Non, malheureusement. Nous sommes en confinement au moment où j’écris ces mots et ce serait le moment parfait pour commencer de l’animation, mais mes projets professionnels prennent encore trop de place.
J’ai hâte d’en refaire, j’aimerais faire parler mes personnages un peu, juste quelques lignes de dialogue histoire de me frotter à cette problématique.
Ce que j’aime dans tes dessins, c’est la manière dont tu les rends légèrement provocateurs, un brin coquins. L’humour est omniprésent. Moi qui suis fan de l’absurde en général, je me délecte à admirer tes oeuvres. Le conventionnel, c’est pas ton truc non ?

Oui, l’absurde c’est une bonne façon de se moquer du conventionnel. Néanmoins, je pense qu’il est bon de continuer à obéir à certaines règles, qu'elles soient narratives ou visuelles pour continuer à donner des points d’ancrage. J’aime faire des illustrations totalement abstraites d’un point de vue narratif mais qui gardent des codes de la BD très clairs, et donc souvent on s’amuse ou s’agace à essayer de recoller l’histoire. Je trouve ça intéressant, un peu comme un effet Koulechov en souvent plus déviant.
Peux-tu m’en dire plus sur ta façon de travailler ? Utilises-tu toujours les mêmes supports, comment varie ta palette de couleurs, procèdes-tu à des esquisses... ?

Pour des raisons pratiques je passe beaucoup de temps sur ma Cintiq et Photoshop, mais j’ai besoin de dessiner sur papier de temps à autre, un peu pour se défouler.
Auparavant je commençais tous mes brouillons sur papier, mais j’ai fini par tout faire via la tablette, par habitude et facilité.
Pour les couleurs, c’est selon l’humeur, mais j’utilise souvent des palettes restreintes, je commence par deux ou trois couleurs puis j’en rajoute si je pense en avoir besoin.
Tu es un artiste touche-à-tout, tu as séduit une flopée de magazines connus pour leur bon goût comme le New Yorker, le NY Times ou Paulette Magazine. Comment sélectionnes-tu tes futurs projets ?

J’ai eu beaucoup de chance de pouvoir travailler très tôt avec ces magazines. Ils m’ont ouvert les portes du monde de l’illustration éditoriale, que je connaissais peu pour être franc. Je sélectionne mes projets en fonction de l’intérêt que j’y porte .
Mais j’ai ce défaut assez commun de pas pouvoir dire “ Non “ parfois, c’est entrain de changer ces dernières années. J’ai parfois peu de temps pour répondre ou je suis déjà occupé sur d’autres travaux, donc je dois refuser pas mal de travail.
D’ailleurs, tu bosses sur quoi en ce moment ?

Des petites BD pour le Magazine du Monde.
Qu’est ce qui t’a plu et attiré lorsque Olow t’a contacté pour collaborer avec eux ?
Etait-ce la première fois que tu travaillais avec une marque de vêtements ?


J’ai bien aimé leurs précédentes collaborations et le coté un peu classe mais aussi décalé.
J’avais déjà bossé pour quelques marques auparavant.
Tu as créé pour nous le personnage de "Moustache". Un personnage qui se retrouve sur nos t-shirts et toujours dans des situations farfelues. Que t’inspire t’il?

Il m’inspire le coté Français un peu con mais attachant, le mec qui met les pieds dans le plat, un peu border line mais qu’on aime quand même. Le genre de mec dont tu ne sais pas s'il faut le pardonner en riant ou lui mettre une gifle, au moins une fois pour l’exemple.
Si tu devais me citer un mot qui définirait ton style ?

The Customer also receives by email and without delay, a receipt of the order sent electronically, regarding as a confirmation of the order (“Order Confirmation”).

The Customer receives electronically, the confirmation that the Goods have been dispatched.

The delivery shall take place at the location indicated by the Customer at the time of the Order.

Additionally, by undertaking these different steps to Order, the Customer accepts to strictly comply with this Agreement, in accordance with section 1316-1 of the French Civil Code.

The Vendor undertakes to deliver the Goods and Services subject of the Order Confirmation. In the event that a Good ordered is unavailable, the Vendor will promptly inform the Customer about this.

However, under section L.122-1 of the French Consumer Code, the Vendor reserves the right to cancel your Order if the Order is abnormal, involves bad faith or for any other reason that is under the sole discretion of the Vendor. The Vendor also reserves the right to reject orders from any customer with whom the Vendor have an ongoing legal dispute regarding a prior order.

Place of Delivery

The place of Delivery shall be determined by the Customer within the Territory, under sanction to refuse the Order.

The Customer is exclusively responsible for any error in the Delivery due to a lack of indication contained in the Order.

Amount of Delivery Charges

The amount of Delivery Charges depends upon the amount of the Order and upon the Method of Delivery the Customer chooses. In any case, the amount of Delivery Charges shall be indicated to you before the Order Confirmation.

The Delivery Charges are free if the amount exceeds EUR 200,00.

Delivery Term

Delivery Terms are available for review on the Website. They may change depending on the availability of the Goods subject of the Order.

Delivery Terms are expressed in working days and correspond to an average time for preparing and shipping the Order to the Customer.

Delivery Terms shall begin to run at the Order Confirmation date.

Delays

In the event of delays in the Delivery, the Order is not cancelled. The Vendor shall inform the Customer by electronic mail that the delivery will take place later than what was contemplated by the Parties. You will be then entitled to decide whether to confirm or cancel your order and shall send to the Vendor a cancellation notice of the Order at service-client@olow.fr.

If the Order has not been shipped yet at the time the Vendor receives the cancellation notice, the Delivery is effectively cancelled and the Customer is reimbursed of the payment he/she made, within fifteen (15) days from the receipt of the cancellation notice.

If the Order has been shipped at the time the Vendor receives cancellation notice, the Customer is still entitled to cancel the order by refusing the Delivery. The Vendor shall then reimburse the Customer of the payment he/she made, within fifteen (15) days from receipt of the returned products in the same condition as they were sent and must have their original label. The return expenses remain at the cost of the Customer.

Tracking

The Customer can follow the track progress of his/her Order on his/her account on the Website. Regarding the delivery progress, the Customer shall contact the Company to obtain a tracker number, to follow the progress.

You have received your order but the product does not suit you?
